Community KnowledgeKeeper

The FMSD has a mandate to:

  • Review resource development applications, environmental impact assessments and other regulatory documents to ensure that the environmental issues important to Fort McKay are addressed and mitigated;
  • Facilitate on-going consultation within the Community so Fort McKay residents know how their traditional lands are being affected by industrial development and to obtain advice and input from residents;
  • Continuously interface with utility, timber harvest, and conventional oil and gas companies, with heavy oil and oil sands developers and government with respect to social, economic and environmental matters, and to provide industry with a reliable contact point; and
  • Develop in-community knowledge and capacity for addressing environmental, social, economic and technical matters relating to resource development.

The Community KnowledgeKeeper (KnowledgeKeeper) provides the Fort McKay Sustainability Department (FMSD) with both a public website and a confidential system for tracking consultation, industrial development, traditional land use information, and environmental data. The public website allows industry to submit spatial data and information on proposed industrial developments. This website also provides an easy means of communication with community members, industry, government, and the public. A confidential series of data entry forms allows staff and consultants to manage consultation records, enter traditional land use data and archive documents. All information, reports, multimedia files and documents entered into KnowledgeKeeper are easily searchable, retrievable, and archived in a secure back-up system. Through a series of secure dashboards and maps displaying industrial development, traditional land use and environmental data, KnowledgeKeeper provides Fort McKay with the most up-to-date and relevant information available for land and resource management of their territory.

The FMSD is dedicated to building greater efficiency and community access to information and services while continuing Fort McKay First Nation’s tradition of longstanding relationship building with industry for the betterment of the community.
